Integrative Yoga for Seniors FAQs

Any yoga instructor who has completed a Yoga Alliance RYT training, or who has equivalent training and experience is invited to apply for enrollment.  Instructor training must be complete at the time of application in order to be accepted.

If you wish you may begin an application, save your progress and wait until your training program is completed before submitting the completed application.

Once submitted please allow approximately two weeks for your application to be reviewed.  Please note the Application Deadline indicated on the program page. You will be notified of the acceptance decision via email, at the email address associated with your account.  Acceptance into the program without registration and payment does not reserve your place in the course.

Accepted applicants will receive instructions on how to register. Registration is limited to 40 participants per course. Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and require payment in full. We will offer a waitlist for courses that fill to maximum capacity prior to the registration deadline.  If no sessions are open for registration at the time of acceptance, accepted applicants will receive notification when the next session becomes available.

The course registration fee is $2,195.  Those that register by the noted early registration deadline qualify for a 10% discount.

Duke Affiliates qualify for a 15% discount at the time of their registration. This discount is not eligible to be combined with the early registration discount. Duke Affiliates are defined as Duke Employees, Duke Registered Volunteers, and Duke Students.

For programs with a designated start date, transfers are not allowed. Cancellations can be made by completing a cancellation request form. If you make this request at least 7 days prior to the start of the program you will receive a refund of your payment minus an administration fee equal to 10% of the registration fee. If you request a cancellation within 7 days of the program start date or do not arrive on your scheduled start date you will forfeit your payment.

Check-in on Day 1 opens at 1:30 pm, with the program starting at 2 pm and will meet until 5:30 pm.  Days 2-7 will meet from 9 am to 5:30 pm, and Day 8 will meet 9 am – noon.

Each day will involve a balance of lectures, movement, small group work and discussions.

A beverage service is available each day of the program, and lunch will be served on days 2-7 of the training.  Vegetarian options are available.

  • How to safely and effectively teach yoga to older adults
  • Health conditions common to seniors including osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease, chronic pain and joint replacement
  • How specific health challenges may affect yoga practice
  • How commonly-used medications may affect yoga practice
  • Hands-on training in teaching skills specific to older practitioners with varied health concerns
  • Yoga practices to help relieve symptoms of common ailments
  • Yoga practices to help improve function and enhance balance
  • Practical strategies for adapting yoga practice to older bodies, minds and spirits

Students who successfully complete this 8-day course will earn a Certificate of Completion for the Integrative Yoga for Seniors Professional Training issued by Duke Integrative Medicine. Duke is not a certifying body for yoga.

Students will have the opportunity to earn a total of 50 CEUs for the 50 contact hours spent in the training from the following organizations:

There is no financial assistance available for this course.

The closest airport is the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). The airport is approximately 18 miles from our location.

Course participants often forgo rental cars in lieu of the shuttle service that may be provided by their lodging choice. However, others find that a rental car provides more freedom for them to venture around the Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill area restaurants, shops and entertainment venues outside of the training hours.

Visit the Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau’s website for a searchable database of lodging in and around the Durham area as well as an overview of all the city has to offer: http://www.durham-nc.com/hotels-inns/.

For November 2019:  The program instructors have reserved a block of rooms at the following facilities.  These arrangements are not managed by Duke Integrative Medicine.
